Key takeaways
- 1
A linked source can cite your page without recommending your company; a recommendation can name your brand without linking it.
- 2
An answer observation is a dated sample under specific conditions, while GA4 counts attributed sessions that reached your site.
- 3
Keep Google AI-feature impressions in their own Search Console series. They are neither citation counts nor referral visits.
Four separate events
From answer appearance to business action
- 1
Mention
The answer names a brand.
- 2
Citation
The answer links a source URL.
- 3
Referral
A visit arrives with an identifiable source.
- 4
Lead
A configured action is recorded.
Define the unit before counting it
A mention is the brand's name in the visible answer. A citation is a link from the answer to a specific source page. A recommendation is a stronger editorial statement such as naming a vendor as an option; it deserves its own field because a neutral mention is not necessarily an endorsement.
A referral session begins only when someone actually reaches your site and your analytics system attributes the session. A lead or key event is later behavior, such as a submitted demo form. One answer may contain several source links, and one person may return later through a different channel. Do not pretend the units form a single funnel with perfect attribution.

Choose a denominator for each question
A count becomes useful only when a reader knows what was examined. For a saved-answer study, the denominator might be the number of answers collected for a fixed question set in one search experience. If 4 of 20 saved answers name a brand, describe that as 4 of the 20 answers you sampled. It is not a share of all answers shown to every user. Record whether you repeated each question, whether search was enabled, and whether an answer was unavailable; otherwise the next reporting period may not be comparable.
A cited URL has a different unit from a mentioned brand. One answer can link several sources, and one source page can appear in several answers. Decide whether your report counts answers with at least one link to your site, unique linked pages, or every link occurrence. Keep the raw answer and URL so another person can reproduce the classification. A recommendation deserves an additional judgment field, because a neutral source citation can be present without any endorsement of the company behind it.
Search Console's Generative AI report uses Google's impression rules for supported Search features. Its property-level chart and page-level table can produce different totals. GA4 sessions depend on visits reaching your site and on attribution data surviving the trip. A lead depends on a configured event or CRM definition. State each denominator beside the number instead of hiding it in a methodology page.
- Answer sample: answers observed, questions tested, platform, mode, date, region, and account conditions.
- Citations: answers containing a linked URL, plus the exact pages linked.
- Referrals: attributed sessions in a named analytics property and date window.
- Leads: named key event or CRM stage, with the attribution rule used.

Capture answer evidence without inflating the sample
Choose a stable set of buyer questions, then record the platform, search mode, exact wording, region, language, date, account context, and saved answer. For every answer, note whether the brand was mentioned, recommended, and linked. Save the linked URL rather than only the domain, because the cited page determines what you can improve.
Run the question in the actual consumer search experience where access and terms permit. A model API output or a screenshot without the prompt and date is insufficient evidence for a claim about the app's current search answer. Repeat questions on a consistent schedule and keep prior observations so changes can be checked.
- 01
Freeze the cohort
Keep the same buyer questions for the reporting window; put new questions in a separate cohort.
- 02
Mark three answer outcomes
Record mention, recommendation, and linked source independently, including explicit absence.
- 03
Preserve the answer
Save a shareable answer URL or dated screenshot with the exact prompt and conditions.

Measure visits and leads in their own system
In GA4, the AI Assistant default channel groups recognized assistant referrals; Session source / medium lets you inspect individual sources. Google excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode from this channel and counts them in Organic Search. OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com, but verify your property's values. Compare attributed sessions with landing pages and configured key events; do not relabel direct or unassigned sessions as AI traffic.
Search Console's Generative AI report, when available, separately shows impressions for links in supported Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its page and property aggregation can differ. It is useful as Google visibility evidence, but it is not a citation log for every prompt or a count of ChatGPT visits.

Read the combination without inventing causation
Consider a week in which sampled citations rise but attributed visits do not. First inspect which pages were linked and whether the links were actually clickable in the saved answers. The cited page might answer an early research question that rarely earns a click, or the sample might have changed. Do not immediately label the campaign a success or failure. Repeat the same prompts and compare the landing pages, dates, and search modes before changing a page.
Now consider a period in which AI Assistant sessions rise but no lead event appears. Check whether the event fires on a test submission, whether the landing page answers the visitor's likely next question, and whether the traffic source is the assistant you meant to study. A broken event can look like a conversion problem; a confusing landing page can create a real conversion problem. Those require different fixes. Conversely, a lead that follows an attributed session does not establish which exact answer persuaded the person.
Google AI-feature impressions may rise while your sampled answer links stay flat because they observe different populations. The Search Console report covers supported Google Search features, while your answer log is a deliberate, small set of questions and conditions. Use disagreement between the two as a prompt to inspect page and query mix, not as a reason to average their values into a percentage.

Turn the evidence into a useful weekly report
Show four rows with their sources and denominators: sampled answers, Google AI-feature impressions, identifiable referral sessions, and tracked key events. A rise in answer citations can justify checking whether those cited pages answer the buyer's next question; a rise in referrals without leads can justify reviewing the landing page and event setup.
For example, a fictional team could observe 20 answers, 4 mentions, 2 citations, 3 attributed sessions, and 1 demo event. Those numbers cannot be added into a 30-point score. The team should inspect which pages were cited, which pages received visits, and whether the demo event was configured correctly before drawing a conclusion.
Example note: The numbers in this paragraph are fictional and demonstrate reporting units, not a TopFound or client outcome.
A reporting routine another person can audit
At the beginning of a reporting cycle, save the question cohort and the pages each question should help a buyer find. During collection, preserve the actual answer or a shareable link, mark the brand outcome, and copy the full linked source URL. Export the Search Console and GA4 views using recorded date ranges and timezones. At the end, write one decision for each important page: keep watching, improve a specific answer, investigate attribution, or repair a broken event. This turns reporting into a record of decisions rather than a decorative dashboard.
Keep the original observation even after a page changes. In the next cycle, compare the same question, mode, region, and target page before attributing a difference to your edit. Search answers can vary without any site change, and reporting windows may include seasonality or product launches. A useful note says what changed, what evidence was observed afterward, and what remains uncertain. That is more trustworthy than a single blended visibility score.
- 01
Save the method
Write down prompts, conditions, metric definitions, property names, and date windows before recording results.
- 02
Keep the raw evidence
Store answer captures, exact cited URLs, and the exports used for sessions and events.
- 03
Record a next action
Tie each proposed content or technical change to the observed page-level problem and a recheck date.
Common questions
Is an AI citation the same as a brand mention?
No. A citation is a linked source URL. A mention names a brand in answer text. An answer can do either, both, or neither.
Can I add answer citations and GA4 visits to get a visibility score?
No. Citations in a sampled set and attributed sessions have different denominators. Report the two series alongside their collection method.
Can an AI answer cite a page without mentioning its brand?
Yes. Record the linked source URL and the brand name in the answer as separate observations. A source link can appear without the brand name in the answer text, and a brand can be named without a linked citation.
