ChatGPT SEO: crawl access, extractable answers, and a measurement loop for SaaS

ChatGPT SEO is making public pages retrievable, accurate, and worth citing in ChatGPT—not a rank you can buy and not proof that any brand is already cited.

The short answer

ChatGPT SEO is the practice of making a brand’s public pages retrievable, factually accurate, and citable when people ask ChatGPT category, comparison, and problem questions. A mention without a link is not a citation. A citation is not a rank you can buy, and this guide does not claim TopFound is cited at any rate. OpenAI’s search crawler is OAI-SearchBot. Opting that crawler out keeps a site out of ChatGPT search answers, while GPTBot is a separate control for training. ChatGPT-User is for user-started visits and is not how Search opt-out works. This URL is the ChatGPT engine guide beside /blog/claude-citation-eligibility, /blog/gemini-ai-overviews-saas-playbook, and /blog/perplexity-seo-for-saas. Citation tactics stay on /resources/how-to-get-cited-in-chatgpt. TopFound (topfound.io) is the AEO / AI SEO agency—not a Manchester company with a similar name.

Key takeaways

  • Demand notes (labeled, 2026-10-04 lock): Ahrefs Lite US Overview — primary “chatgpt seo” SV 800 / KD 0 / CPC $6 / intent informational + commercial. Tool readout—not a TopFound ranking and not a traffic forecast. Volume is why this URL exists next to the other engine guides.
  • Keep three rows: crawl access, accurate description, and citation URL. Do not blend them.
  • OAI-SearchBot is the Search control. GPTBot is the training control. ChatGPT-User is not the Search opt-out.
  • This page is the ChatGPT engine guide. Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity keep their own URLs. The ChatGPT how-to stays on /resources/how-to-get-cited-in-chatgpt.
  • Log dated prompts. Do not turn a handful of screenshots into a citation rate. TopFound is not publishing one here.

Who this ChatGPT SEO guide is for

This guide is for SaaS marketers and founders who need an engine-specific account of ChatGPT SEO. Buyers already ask ChatGPT for tools, alternatives, and implementation advice. You need to know whether your pages can be retrieved, whether the answer describes the product you sell, and whether a source link points somewhere you accept.

Page ownership: this URL owns ChatGPT SEO as the missing engine guide next to /blog/claude-citation-eligibility, /blog/gemini-ai-overviews-saas-playbook, and /blog/perplexity-seo-for-saas. The tactical ChatGPT citation page is /resources/how-to-get-cited-in-chatgpt. The cross-engine idea of being named, accurate, and cited is /blog/llm-visibility. The citation process that is not ChatGPT-specific is /blog/ai-citation-optimization. Do not collapse those jobs into one post.

TopFound is the AEO / GEO / AI SEO agency at topfound.io. This article does not present client citation screenshots, win rates, or traffic from ChatGPT. When it says “we,” it means editorial practice. It does not mean a Manchester studio with a similar name.

What ChatGPT SEO means

ChatGPT SEO is an observation plus a publishing practice. The observation: when a buyer asks a non-branded question, does ChatGPT name the right company, describe it fairly, and attach a source you accept? The practice: remove the access blocks you control, put stable facts in text, and make the page worth quoting. It is not a keyword-density project, and it is not a promise that ChatGPT will recommend you.

Two mechanisms get mixed up in vendor copy. One is whatever the model already associates with a name from material it was trained on. You cannot see that mix, and you should not invent a story about it. The other is retrieval while answering, which is why a current public page can be cited and why a blocked page cannot be fetched by the search crawler. Work on the part you can see: the answer in front of you, the URL it cites, and the robots rules on your host.

Quotable AEO block: ChatGPT SEO means your public pages can be retrieved for ChatGPT search, the description matches the product, and a citation points at a source you accept. A mention is not a citation. A citation is not a ranking you can purchase.

ChatGPT SEO fact → what you record → common mix-up

AccessOAI-SearchBot is allowed to fetch the URLBlocking the search crawler and calling it an SEO tactic
MentionThe right brand name appearsCounting a same-name company as you
AccuracyCategory, product, and limits match public factsTreating any mention as a win
CitationA source URL you accept appearsCalling a mention a citation, or a citation a rank

OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, and ChatGPT-User

OpenAI documents these as separate controls. OAI-SearchBot is for search. It is used to surface websites in ChatGPT’s search features. If you opt out of OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI says the site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link. Allowing OAI-SearchBot is the publisher control that keeps search retrieval possible. It is not a switch that forces a citation.

GPTBot is the crawler associated with training generative foundation models. Disallowing GPTBot tells OpenAI not to use that content for training. It is independent of OAI-SearchBot. A site can allow search and disallow training, or the reverse. OpenAI says that if you allow both, it may reuse one crawl so it does not fetch twice. A robots.txt change for search can take about 24 hours to be picked up. Do not judge a same-day test as a final opt-out result.

ChatGPT-User is different again. OpenAI uses it when a person asks ChatGPT or a custom GPT to visit a page, or when a GPT Action calls an external app. It is not an automatic web crawl, robots.txt may not apply because a user started the action, and OpenAI says it is not used to decide whether content may appear in Search. Use OAI-SearchBot for the Search opt-out. Do not write a ChatGPT-User rule and think you have done ChatGPT SEO.

OpenAI’s publisher FAQ says that for content to be included in summaries and snippets in ChatGPT, you should not block OAI-SearchBot. If a disallowed URL is still known from somewhere else, a link and title may still be shown in some ChatGPT surfaces unless you also use noindex—and the crawler has to be allowed to read that tag. None of this is a citation guarantee.

Pages that ChatGPT SEO can actually use

Once access is possible, the page has to answer a buyer question in text. For SaaS, that usually means a category page, a comparison, a pricing page that matches the product, an integrations page, and a short answer to the objection sales hears every week. Put the definition in the first paragraph. Name who the product is for and who it is not for. Date the facts that go stale.

Contradictions lose. If the homepage says one category and a review site says another, the model has two stories. Align the public facts first. The entity practice is /blog/entity-seo-for-saas. Third-party pages you do not control still matter as corroboration; you cannot order them to change, and you should not invent that they already describe you.

The detailed citation workflow—what to extract, how to structure a quotable answer, how to log a test—is /resources/how-to-get-cited-in-chatgpt. This guide does not repeat that page. It only sets the boundary: ChatGPT SEO includes access and measurement, and the citation craft lives on the resource.

How to measure ChatGPT SEO without a fake citation rate

A useful log has a date, the exact prompt, the account locale if you know it, mention yes or no, accuracy pass or fail, and the citation URL if one appears. Log the prompts where you are absent. A sheet of only the wins is not ChatGPT SEO measurement.

OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Check your own analytics property before you report a number. Sessions with that source are referrals, not citations. A citation can happen with no click. A click can happen from a navigational link that is not a category mention. Keep the rows apart. Do not relabel direct traffic as ChatGPT traffic.

Fifteen to forty non-branded prompts is enough to start if you will re-run them. Branded prompts (“what is [you]”) belong in a separate slice so they do not inflate the read. Re-run on a cadence you can staff. If the answer changes and the site did not, write that down. Do not publish a percentage of “ChatGPT” from one afternoon. This article does not include a TopFound citation rate because we are not claiming one.

ChatGPT SEO loop

  1. Confirm OAI-SearchBot is not blocked on the URLs you hope can be cited.
  2. Freeze the buyer questions. Separate branded and non-branded prompts.
  3. Log mention, accuracy, and citation URL. Log absences.
  4. Check analytics for utm_source=chatgpt.com as a referral row, not as a citation row.
  5. Send misses to a page or fact fix. Send the craft details to /resources/how-to-get-cited-in-chatgpt.

ChatGPT SEO next to Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity

ChatGPT SEO does not tell you what Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity will do with the same prompt. Those engines have their own access rules and their own answers. The sibling guides are /blog/claude-citation-eligibility, /blog/gemini-ai-overviews-saas-playbook, and /blog/perplexity-seo-for-saas. Google’s conversational Search experience is a different product again; that explainer is /blog/google-ai-mode.

If you need one map of “named, accurate, cited” across assistants, use /blog/llm-visibility. If you need a ratio against named competitors on a frozen panel, use /blog/ai-share-of-voice. If you need the non-ChatGPT citation process, use /blog/ai-citation-optimization. Owning ChatGPT SEO on this URL means the other URLs stay specific.

Where managed help starts

Informational readers can run the access check and the prompt log from this page. Commercial readers who want a team to ship pages, fix facts, and re-check engines should start at /services/llm-visibility-optimization, not at a second sales pitch inside this URL.

TopFound’s public list prices, if you are pricing the agency rather than the idea, are on /pricing: Growth $797/month, Scale $1,297/month, and Custom scoped. This article does not invent tool prices or competitor retainers.

A results guarantee is a contract term on qualified plans, not the definition of ChatGPT SEO. Nothing in OpenAI’s crawler docs is a placement you can purchase. Do not read this guide as evidence that TopFound, or any other brand, is already cited.

FAQ

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is the practice of making public pages retrievable, accurately described, and citable when people ask ChatGPT buyer questions. Record access, mention, accuracy, and citation as separate facts. It is not a classic rank and not a guaranteed recommendation.

Does ChatGPT SEO mean we will be cited?

No. Allowing OAI-SearchBot and publishing a clear page make retrieval possible. OpenAI does not offer a citation you can buy, and this guide does not claim a citation rate for TopFound or anyone else.

Should we block GPTBot to do ChatGPT SEO?

GPTBot is the training control. OAI-SearchBot is the search control. They are independent. Blocking GPTBot does not perform ChatGPT SEO, and blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps pages out of ChatGPT search answers.

What is ChatGPT-User?

OpenAI uses ChatGPT-User when a person asks ChatGPT to visit a page or when a GPT Action calls an external app. It is not the automatic search crawler, and it is not the robots.txt control for Search. Use OAI-SearchBot for that.

How do we see ChatGPT traffic?

OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Confirm that in your own analytics. Those sessions are referrals, not a count of citations.

Is ChatGPT SEO the same as Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity SEO?

No. Use /blog/claude-citation-eligibility, /blog/gemini-ai-overviews-saas-playbook, and /blog/perplexity-seo-for-saas for those engines. Google AI Mode is /blog/google-ai-mode.

Where is the step-by-step citation guide?

On /resources/how-to-get-cited-in-chatgpt. This URL explains ChatGPT SEO and the access rules. It does not replace that resource.

Where does TopFound fit?

TopFound (topfound.io) is a managed AEO / AI SEO agency. This page is the explainer. It is not a case study and not a citation proof. A soft next step is /aeo-report. Public plans are on /pricing (Growth $797/month, Scale $1,297/month, Custom scoped).

Use the ChatGPT guide, then the sibling engines

Stay here for ChatGPT SEO. Use the Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity guides for those engines. The step-by-step ChatGPT citation page is separate. TopFound (topfound.io) does not treat a screenshot as proof.

Conclusion

ChatGPT SEO is the priority head for this page because the engine guide was missing beside Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, and because Ahrefs Lite, United States, 2026-10-04, shows SV 800, KD 0, CPC $6, with informational and commercial intent. KD 0 is a tool score, not a forecast that this URL will own the query. The job of the page is to separate access, accuracy, and citation, and to point the craft at /resources/how-to-get-cited-in-chatgpt.

Keep Claude on /blog/claude-citation-eligibility, Gemini and AI Overviews on /blog/gemini-ai-overviews-saas-playbook, and Perplexity on /blog/perplexity-seo-for-saas. When you want managed work from the agency at topfound.io, use /services/llm-visibility-optimization or /aeo-report. Do not treat this article as proof of a citation.
